Today we spoke to Naeema Abrahams - Specialist Scientist and chair of the South African Gender-Based Violence and Health Initiative from Medical Research Council’s Gender and Health Research Unit. Naeema told us about the work that they do and also about some of the researches they have conducted. And we also spoke to Marietta De Vaal – Head of Research Unit from the Commission on Gender Equality. The commission is planning workshops and Gender Dialogues to be conducted throughout the country as a means of reaching out to the community and at the same time change the mind sets of those members of the society that need education in relation to gender equality. And our last interview was with Dr Raghavan Charudattan – a US expert on Biocontrol of pest plants and Allan Wood from the South African Society of Plant Pathologists. Dr Charudattan is here as a guest of the SA Society of Plant Pathologists and Stellenbosch University. He will present an address at the Society's conference in Benoni next week.

Winter having an effect on Bloodstocks

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “The winter is having a severe effect on our bloodstocks and we are amidst a severe blood stock shortage”, says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. There is a critical shortage in the O and B blood groups, with only a 2-day supply left. The A-positive blood stocks are also under severe pressure as only a 3-day supply is left. WCBS always aim to have a blood stock level of 5 days. The winter weather is not conducive to going out, and with the continuing storms in Cape Town, they are seeing the effects on their blood stocks. Blood donors suffer from colds and flu during this time and can subsequently not donate blood – up until the resolution of their symptoms .
