16 January – Human Rights
Today we spoke to Ashraf Cassiem from the Western Cape Anti-Eviction Campaign. About 300 shackdwelling residents face a forced removal by the City of Cape Town to a wasteland without water, roads, sanitation, electricity, clinics, schools or transport in two weeks time. The Western Cape Anti-Eviction Campaign and the Cape Town Anti-War Coalition have condemned the apartheid style forced removal practices and they say they demand an end to the use of hundreds of police in unjust evictions, and houses for all. If you want more information about the evictions you can contact Ashraf at 082 480 5489 or Eleanor Hoedemaker from the Zille Rain Heights Residents Association at 072 4490436. If you want to hear more about this issue – make sure that you listen to newsline on Thursday at 7 o’clock in the evening or the rerun on Friday at 8PM, Thando Mfengwana will be speaking to different parties involved including Cosatu regional secretary Tony Ehrenreich about his call for land invasion.
