In today's show, we spoke to Ruth Bourne – Principal at Carel du Toit Centre for Hearing Impaired Children. According to the principal, one of the learners, Inako Kom was robbed of her hearing aids, worth R 23 000 in Delft. It is suspected that the person who stole her hearing aids thought that they were a music listening device or Bluetooth. Now the four year old hearing has deteriorated further and she has a profound loss in the left ear and a severe hearing loss in the right ear. The Centre is asking for donations towards replacing her hearing aids. According to Mrs Bourne, Inako’s whole personality has changed since the futile theft of her hearing aids. Every day that she doesn't hear, ensures that her speech and language delay increases - taking away her opportunity of mainstreaming at a later stage. In today's show we spoke to Yolanda Bana - From PASSOP. The organisation will be hosting a fundraising event to raise money for the victims of famine in the Horn of Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea). It is reported that in the last 90 days more than 29,000 children under five years of age have died of starvation, killing 323 children every day. It is the biggest humanitarian disaster in the region in the last two decades. PASSOP is working closely with the non-profit Gift of the Givers Foundation, which is currently on the ground in Somalia with medical teams providing support for Somali people. In today's show we spoke to Dr Devan Moodley - Medical Oncologist and Non Executive Director of Campaigning for Cancer. Dr Moodley is one of South Africa's leading oncologists who specialises in treating teenagers and young adults with cancer. About two weeks he presented a talk titled Breast Cancer and the use of Aromatase Inhibitors – how pharmacists and nurses are to educate, counsel and motivate patients. It is reported that one in nine women in South Africa will get cancer of the breast at some time in their lives. According to Dr Moodley, as the incidence and awareness of breast cancer increases, pharmacists and nurses will be required to play a more active role in the lives of patients affected by the disease. We closed off with an interview with Jo-Anne Smetherham and Vivienne Budaza - Executive Director at GAPA or Grandmothers Against Poverty and Aids. We were talking about Amatsha Ntliziyo –“the never-give-ups” a photo exhibition about a group of grandmothers who are showing extraordinary grit, care for others and even humour, despite the heavy burdens they carry. The gogos in the exhibition are among the many who have formed GAPA. South African photojournalist Eric Miller has captured the struggle and spirit of 17 grandmothers in intimate portraits of them, and their families. The photographs will be combined with excerpts from the grandmothers’ life stories, documented by Jo-Anne. The exhibition is at the District Six Museum’s Home coming centre till the 30th of August. In today's show we spoke to Damaris Kiewiets – Chairperson of the Cape Metro Health Forum. On Thursday, the 18th of August she will be part of a panel discussing the National Health Insurance. The seminar is hosted by the Getup Standup Afrika. The National Health Insurance has been proposed by the South African government and is aimed at achieving universal access to good quality health care for all South Africans. According to media reports, a number of civil society organisations and labour unions have come out in favour of the NHI but business interest groups are concerned about the cost of implementing the scheme. Last week he presented a talk titled Invasive Pneumococcal Disease – Leading Cause of Morbidity and Mortality in Children”. He will explain more about Pneumococcal Disease. It is reported that currently there are more than 90 known pneumococcal types; the ten most common types account for approximately 62 percent of invasive disease worldwide. On Sakhisizwe today, we spoke to Gwen Williams – Academic Coordinator at the Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa. They are inviting grade 9 learners who are good in mathematics, physical science and English, and who want to achieve a university entrance pass in these subjects in the National Senior Certificate examination to apply for the M&E Bursaries. The Mathematics and English programme is an ISASA initiative to increase the number of black South African learners with mathematics or science passes at National Senior Certificate level, as well as the number of teacher interns with Mathematics or Science as one of their teaching subjects. Our last interview was with Dr Blanche Cupido – a General Practitioner. We were talking about Rheumatic Fever as we know that this week is the Rheumatic Fever Week. Rheumatic fever affects children from as young as five years old and develops after the child has had repeated throat infections known as “strep throat”. People with rheumatic fever may develop heart inflammation, which reoccurs when they repeatedly get it. This leads to scarring and damaging of the heart valves.
