30 August - Human Rights - Help to replace little Inako's hearing aids

In today's show, we spoke to Ruth Bourne – Principal at Carel du Toit Centre for Hearing Impaired Children. According to the principal, one of the learners, Inako Kom was robbed of her hearing aids, worth R 23 000 in Delft. It is suspected that the person who stole her hearing aids thought that they were a music listening device or Bluetooth. Now the four year old hearing has deteriorated further and she has a profound loss in the left ear and a severe hearing loss in the right ear. The Centre is asking for donations towards replacing her hearing aids. According to Mrs Bourne, Inako’s whole personality has changed since the futile theft of her hearing aids. Every day that she doesn't hear, ensures that her speech and language delay increases - taking away her opportunity of mainstreaming at a later stage. She said the loss of these hearing aids will have a profound impact on her development and chances of integrating into society. Anyone interested in making a donation towards

26 August - Arts, Culture & Envirnment - Renovatio Dance Company presents 'Colour Contrast: Where Worlds Collide' & Arts Update

In today's show we spoke to Eulie Mabie – from Renovatio Dance Company. Renovatio is a non-profit organisation, which focuses on underprivileged youth and assists them to reach their goals through arts. We were talking about 'Colour Contrast: Where Worlds Collide' theatre production that is produced by Renovatio Dance Company and will be staged at Artscape Theatre on the 2nd and 3rd of September at 8pm. Marcus Mabie and Lu Jacobs from Renovatio direct this 90-minute hip-hop dance production. They believe that the elevation of urban dance culture from the streets to professional theatre venues is more than entertainment but rather a crossover art that has a following worldwide. We closed off with an interview with Bulelwa Ntlantlu - actress, dancer, poet, rapper and singer. We were talking about Hip Hop Kaslam happening tomorrow night at the Baxter Theatre Concert Hall. Hip Hop Kaslam returns for the fourth time at the Baxter to showcase spaza, street slang and township lifestyle. 25 August - Labour - ILRIG to host a public forum on Nationalisation

In today’s show, we heard from Michael Blake - Researcher and education officer at the International Labour Research and Information Group or ILRIG. Later today ILRIG will be hosting a public forum on Nationalisation. What does it mean? Should we be fighting for it and why is it being debated now? The latest call for nationalisation of mines by ANC Youth League President Julius Malema has sparked a heated debate with others warning that such a move would result in the collapse of South Africa’s economy. 24 August - Gender - Mothers Unite requires financial help

In today's show, we spoke to Gerry Gordon – from Mothers Unite. Mothers Unite was started by Carol Jacobs who realized that children in her neighbourhood were not receiving a minimum of one meal a day. Their vision is to uplift the situation for children and families in the Lavender Hill area by focusing on inclusivity and participation through a number of different projects. 23 August - Human Rights - PASSOP to fundraise for the Horn of Africa

In today's show we spoke to Yolanda Bana - From PASSOP. The organisation will be hosting a fundraising event to raise money for the victims of famine in the Horn of Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea). It is reported that in the last 90 days more than 29,000 children under five years of age have died of starvation, killing 323 children every day. It is the biggest humanitarian disaster in the region in the last two decades. PASSOP is working closely with the non-profit Gift of the Givers Foundation, which is currently on the ground in Somalia with medical teams providing support for Somali people. The event: Western Cape Fights Famine – Horn of Africa Relief will feature music and dance performances, a short documentary screening, live video skype to doctors on the ground in Somalia, and some speeches by political and community leaders. 22 August - Health - Breast Cancer and the use of Aromatase Inhibitors

In today's show we spoke to Dr Devan Moodley - Medical Oncologist and Non Executive Director of Campaigning for Cancer. Dr Moodley is one of South Africa's leading oncologists who specialises in treating teenagers and young adults with cancer. About two weeks he presented a talk titled Breast Cancer and the use of Aromatase Inhibitors – how pharmacists and nurses are to educate, counsel and motivate patients. It is reported that one in nine women in South Africa will get cancer of the breast at some time in their lives. According to Dr Moodley, as the incidence and awareness of breast cancer increases, pharmacists and nurses will be required to play a more active role in the lives of patients affected by the disease. Aromatase inhibitors are widely prescribed for the treatment of oestrogen receptor positive breast cancer, and are mainly dispensed in retail pharmacy. Catch Amatsha Ntliziyo –“the never-give-ups” at the District Six Museum

We closed off with an interview with Jo-Anne Smetherham and Vivienne Budaza - Executive Director at GAPA or Grandmothers Against Poverty and Aids. We were talking about Amatsha Ntliziyo –“the never-give-ups” a photo exhibition about a group of grandmothers who are showing extraordinary grit, care for others and even humour, despite the heavy burdens they carry. The gogos in the exhibition are among the many who have formed GAPA. South African photojournalist Eric Miller has captured the struggle and spirit of 17 grandmothers in intimate portraits of them, and their families. The photographs will be combined with excerpts from the grandmothers’ life stories, documented by Jo-Anne. The exhibition is at the District Six Museum’s Home coming centre till the 30th of August. 16 August - Human Rights - Getup Standup Afrika to host NHI Seminar

In today's show we spoke to Damaris Kiewiets – Chairperson of the Cape Metro Health Forum. On Thursday, the 18th of August she will be part of a panel discussing the National Health Insurance. The seminar is hosted by the Getup Standup Afrika. The National Health Insurance has been proposed by the South African government and is aimed at achieving universal access to good quality health care for all South Africans. According to media reports, a number of civil society organisations and labour unions have come out in favour of the NHI but business interest groups are concerned about the cost of implementing the scheme. The seminar is on Thursday, the 18th of August, on 2nd floor, Armoury Building, Buchanan Square, 160 Sir Lowry Road in Woodstock. The programme starts at 13:00PM – 14:00PM. 15 August - Health - August is Sterilisation Month

In today’s show, we spoke to Carla Johnson - National Organiser for the Association for Voluntary Sterilisation of South Africa. This month is Sterilisation month and aims to inform and educate men and women on the benefits of Sterilisation as a final method of contraception. We were talking about Voluntary Sterilisation. According to the association, Voluntary Sterilisation is a positive step taken by responsible men and women who want to take charge of their lives to uplift themselves and their families by choosing this form of permanent contraception. Protect your child against pneumococcal disease, vaccinate!

We also spoke to Dr Ashley Wewege - Consultant Paediatrician and Director of National Paediatric Management Group South Africa. Last week he presented a talk titled Invasive Pneumococcal Disease – Leading Cause of Morbidity and Mortality in Children”. He will explain more about Pneumococcal Disease. It is reported that currently there are more than 90 known pneumococcal types; the ten most common types account for approximately 62 percent of invasive disease worldwide. The best way to protect against pneumococcal disease is through vaccination. There are two types of pneumococcal vaccine currently available: a polysaccharide vaccine and a conjugate vaccine. In today’s show, we were joined on the line by Ntshadi Mofokeng – from Equal Education. Equal Education and Ikamva Youth are hosting a Careers Indaba tomorrow at the Harare Library in Khayelitsha from 2:00pm till 5:00pm. 02 August - Human Rights - ISASA offers M&E Bursaries

On Sakhisizwe today, we spoke to Gwen Williams – Academic Coordinator at the Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa. They are inviting grade 9 learners who are good in mathematics, physical science and English, and who want to achieve a university entrance pass in these subjects in the National Senior Certificate examination to apply for the M&E Bursaries. The Mathematics and English programme is an ISASA initiative to increase the number of black South African learners with mathematics or science passes at National Senior Certificate level, as well as the number of teacher interns with Mathematics or Science as one of their teaching subjects. The programme is managed by ISASA and funded through donor contributions. DNA Project rolls out DNA Awareness Campaign

We also heard from Vanessa Lynch –Founder of the DNA Project. The DNA Project is a registered non-profit, public benefit organization that recognizes the critical importance of DNA evidence in the resolution of crime. It is committed to advancing justice through the expanded use of DNA evidence in conjunction with a national DNA criminal intelligence database, also known as a 'National DNA Database'. The DNA Project hopes that its efforts will translate into the comprehensive use of DNA analysis for crime detection and prevention in South Africa. We spoke about their DNA Awareness Campaign. In today’s show, we were joined by Sister Louise Goosen – From Milk Matters. We were talking about Breastfeeding. This week we are celebrating the World Breastfeeding Week and the theme for this year is: "Talk to me! Breastfeeding - a 3D Experience" . The theme deals with communication at various levels and between various sectors and focusing on engaging and mobilising youth intergenerational work. Milk Matters, is a registered Non-Profit Organisation and Public Benefit Organisation that feels very strongly about informing the public and all related parties of the advantages of breastfeeding. It is reported that Breastmilk is the best food for a baby. Babies do not need any other foods or water, except breastmilk until they are 6 months old but Sister Louise explained more. Volunteers for Stress Elimination Program needed

We also spoke to Faiez Kirsten – A Medical doctor and founder of the Institute for the Enhancement of Health, Wellness and Performance. Dr Kirsten provides various services and products to the public like the Stress Elimination Program which is available as a downloadable ebook at present. He is currently planning a Stress Elimination seminar and would like to take a few volunteers through the program before the seminar for the purposes of results and feedback. Sahaja Yoga meditation transforming communities

We were also joined by Maike and Jane. We were talking about the Sahaja Yoga meditation. It is said that people who practice meditation on the regular basis look and feel typically 10 or even 15 years younger than other people at their age. This week is the Rheumatic Fever Week

Our last interview was with Dr Blanche Cupido – a General Practitioner. We were talking about Rheumatic Fever as we know that this week is the Rheumatic Fever Week. Rheumatic fever affects children from as young as five years old and develops after the child has had repeated throat infections known as “strep throat”. People with rheumatic fever may develop heart inflammation, which reoccurs when they repeatedly get it. This leads to scarring and damaging of the heart valves.
