Combating Unemployment

We spoke to Liziwe and Noncedo from Abalimi Bezekhaya about combating poverty and unemployment through providing individuals with the necessary skills for sustainable gardens.

Abalimi Bezekhaya promotes small scale urban farming.  We are a development organization and partner with active members of the community to aid their efforts in greening, growing and bettering their communities. Abalimi Bezekhaya is a Voluntary Association, established in 1982.

They spoke about the training they offer and projects that, they currently involve with.

Mental health through providing hope and reconciliation

We spoke to Dr. John Parker director of the Spring Foundation/ Clinical Psychiatrist at Lentegeur Hospital, Jitsvinger musician and activist, Jack de Jong graffiti muralist and Nabeel Petersen project co-ordinator.

Arting 4 impact is a public engagement project consisting out of communities, street artist and scientist.

The project has been install in 3 different countries South Africa, India and Botswana. The aim of this initiative is to educate and raise awareness around mental health through providing hope and reconciliation rather then stigmatizing and discriminating people with mental illnesses.

They will paint a big mural that stay's in the community where people can engage and learn about mental health.

Maxim Kids

We spoke to coach Allen, director Riaan and professional boxer Abdulaziz from Maxim Kids. Maxim Kids is a non-profit organisation established in 2010, to empower underprivileged youth to reach their dreams through using sports as a tool.

Youngsters from the age of 6 years and upwards are welcome to join for free. The training provided is to teach youngsters discipline that they can apply to their everyday life.

They will have an event fight for change on the 24th of August at Hope Street City Hall Cape Town CBD. Event starts at 19:00 to late and pre-sold tickets go for R150.00, at the gate R200.00 and close to the ring R300.00.

Cuppa Day and Women in Business


We spoke to Fadwa Walker Community Mobiliser at Cancer Association of South Africa in aid of their initiatives to challenge all workplaces, businesses and services to open their hearts and raise awareness for those affected by cancer.

They will be hosting a Women in Business event on the 11 August whereby all the proceeds raised on the day will go towards supporting cancer support groups. They will also launch their Cuppa campaign on the 3 August in support of cancer.

Local is Lekka


We spoke to Jeremiah Sweets 19-year-old singer, songwriter, producer, pianist and guitarist from Ravensmead Cape Town speaking about his music journey and how that has grown him as an upcoming artist. He has a sweet nurturing sound to his voice that can relate to people of all walks of life.

His mom gave him his first instrument, whereby he has taught himself how to play. Jeremiah Sweets says: “always be yourself”.

He has a range of songs he is working on that will be release soon, keep an eye on the next hit.

Women's Festival


We spoke to Gladys Joyce from Angel Wings Cape Town about their Woman’s Festival that they will be having in observatory on the 9th of August.

Gates open at 9am to 4pm and everyone is welcome to attend, as there will be something for everyone: from face painting, food, speakers all the way to entertainment.

The entry fee is R5 for all and after the event they will be handing out food to people that lives on the streets, if you want to be part of bringing change you can donate to the angel wings Cape Town.

Get involve and support the event as the proceeds raised on the day will be use to empower underprivileged woman and children.

Psychosocial Disability Awareness Month


We spoke to Rene Minnies manager at the Fountain House facility about Psychosocial Disability Awareness Month. A psychosocial disability is when a mental illness becomes pervasive and interferes in a person's functioning, thus preventing them from being able to claim their rights or to participate in society.

The Fountain House facility is under the umbrella of the Cape Mental Health. They have programmes that focus on psychosocial rehab services to enable people with Psychosocial Disability to become inclusive in society. The other programme deals with work order day that focus on skills development looking of opportunity for work and family support, hence they do a lot of advocacy work.

  • Some examples of Psychosocial Disability are, Schizoid disorders such as schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.
  • Anxiety disorders such as obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, agoraphobia and social phobia.
  • Mood disorders such as major and dysthymic depression and bipolar.

Launching "Madiba and Children" 2018

Today, Bridget Kahts and Channel Fredricks from the Center for Early Childhood Development which is a  Non-Profit Organisation, committed to putting young children first by ensuring quality early childhood development for our country’s youngest citizens.

The organisation achieves its goals by providing training, resources and support in early childhood development. Bridget  tell of the recently released book: Madiba and Children, by herself and director Professor Eric Atmore. The book is made up of 3 components, namely:  drawings of Madiba from various schools, sourced photographs by anti-apartheid photographer Benni Ghool and 25 crowd sourced stories by people telling their experience meeting the Legend. 

We spoke and discussed the book and how it aimed to bring awareness to Madiba and the legacy that he aimed to instill, celebrating his values and dedication for children and youth alike.

“Every occasion we dedicate to the concerns ofc the children can only help to  make us a better nation and caring people. There can never be too  much of these occasions or events. In facet, I always say, that everyday of our lives should be devoted to them- for they are our soul future. Every day we should find some time and space for consciously thinking about and doing something for a child or children generally.- Nelson Mandela
