Jazzart Dance Theatre’s popular Danscape has been rebranded as Azishe!. Translated from isiZulu “azishe” means “let it burn”; the festival name is inspired by the energy, passion hunger to succeed that its young participants have brought to the Danscape festival stage since 1999 and will be taking place from the 4 th till the 7 th of July at the Artscape Theatre. The Jetty Crowd is a community orientated film company from Durban and they will be coming to the Western Cape in August to roll out a series of film training workshops aimed specifically at civil society. They have a new series of workshops starting in Pinelands from the 19 th to the 22 nd of August. The cost is R495 per person per workshop, just R1980 in total per person, a lternatively they are prepared to travel out to the organisation if you can get a group of 10 or more. We were talking about the proposed time limitation on Temporary Employment Services being reduced from six months to three months. It appears that one of the great controversies surrounding the forthcoming amendments to the Labour Relations Act, No 66 of 1995 (LRA) is the continued right of existence of Temporary Employment Services (TES), given that TES employees are often subjected to abusive labour practices, and require additional statutory protection. The Portfolio Committee on Labour in the National Assembly has proposed that clause 44 of the 2012 Amendment Bill (proposed amendments) should allow for only three months, rather than six months as a maximum period. This means that if a worker performs work for a TES client in excess of three months the worker shall be deemed to be the employee of the client and will be entitled to the same wage and benefits as the client’s other permanent

On Sakhisizwe today, we spoke to Dr Dino Rech - Medical Director of the Centre for HIV and AIDS Prevention Studies or CHAPS to tell us more about a new medical male circumcision device that they want to pilot in South Africa. The Centre for HIV and AIDS Prevention Studies hopes the new medical male circumcision device which is a pain-free alternative to surgical circumcision will assist government in reaching its target of circumcising more than four million males by 2016. The device, known as PrePex, will be piloted in four provinces Gauteng , North West , Northern Cape and Mpumalanga in the next few months. The pilot studies will assess whether this device is suited to the South African context, what messages should be communicated to communities and how much time is needed for the wound to heal. It appears that Government departments are committed to ensuring complaints are speedily addressed by using their independent mandates and inter-governmental co-operation. This emerged during a defining meeting by the SAHRC with Government departments regarding the commission’s water and sanitation report and in light of the recent serious service delivery breakdown and toilet saga in several parts of SA and a perceived lack of government accountability. The report’s findings included the lack of access to water for the poorest communities in the country; the poor quality of water; the lack of sanitation services in informal settlements, poor maintenance of existing facilities, lack of effective monitoring of private companies contracted to provide services and the effect of mining and agri-business activities on water supply. We spoke to Dr Michael Harrison and Dr Lloyd Tuke - both from the hospital’s neonatal unit  about the effects of substance abuse on pregnant women and their unborn babies . This was the last broadcast in partnership with Media and Training Centre for Health - a Community Learning Programme sponsored by the Commonwealth of Learning that aims to use community media as a platform through which to engage targeted groups of learners around key health issues in an attempt to effect behavioural change in marginalised communities in South Africa.

Glenda, Seithati & Rosen Rosen Puoeng, Glenda Beukes and Seithati Mokoena - phlebotomy learners at Pathcare Academy for training and development were Instudio to tell us more about their 2 weeks research unpacking the issue of HIV/Aids in society. Established in 2006 Pathcare Academy for training and development aims to help address the South African skill shortage in the pathology sector in particular. It also believes in developing well-rounded professionals who will be able to meet the challenges faced in their communities. The academy’s Phlebotomy technician learnership trains young people to become Phlebotomist whose work involves collecting specimens including blood for analysis in either the public or private heath sector. The HIV infection/prevention module saw 37 phlebotomy learners   spending 2 weeks unpacking the issue of HIV/Aids in society as they realised the role men have in protecting women from the disease, the affect the disease has on vulnerable groups

In today's show, we were joined by Nomthandazo Muhambazi - Founder of Paradesi children’s home and place of safety to tell us more about the home she opened in Phoenix , Milnerton. Paradesi opened its doors last year in September after Nomthandazo resigned from her teaching job to assist vulnerable children in the community. She realised this after identifying troubled school children who displayed behavioural problems and anger as many of them were raised by single parents. There are currently 11 children between the ages of 6 months to 5 years at the home and place of safety of which 6 reside there. Donations are welcomed as she currently funds the home herself and faces challenges such as limited resources and facilities for the children. Alicia Rhoda - Director of Christine Revell Children’s Home joined us on the line to talk about their appeal for assistance during this winter. This Athlone based home is a sanctuary for abandoned, neglected and orphaned children. They strive to help young children in need, regardless of their race or gender and works towards a successful re-intergration into a family and the community.
