Arts, Culture & environment - SA Astronomical Observatory to host a talk about "Using the death of stars to study the Universe"

In today's show, we spoke to Eli Kasai – Astronomy and Cosmology PhD Student at UCT. Eli will give a free public talk at SA Astronomical Observatory tomorrow night about "Using the death of stars to study the Universe". The talk will give a basic overview about the birth and death of stars, how their death can be used to study some of the dynamics of the Universe, such as its expansion history and the concept of dark energy. This will be followed by a short summary of how instruments like the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), the Namibian High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) and their successors, the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) and Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will revolutionise our understanding of the Universe by observing dying stars more frequently with higher resolution. The talk is free to the public and starts at 20h00PM. For more information contact the S.A. Astronomical Observatory on (021) 460 9319 or visit www.saao.ac.za or www.salt.ac.za
