The Little Eden Society
We spoke to Gaahele Mokgoro, the Public Relations and Communications Coordinator for LITTLE EDEN Society. LITTLE EDEN is a registered non-profit organization providing life-long care to 300 children and adults with profound intellectual disability in two custom designed residential facilities – Domitilla and Danny Hyams Home in Edenvale, and Elvira Rota Village, in Bapsfontein. LITTLE EDEN aims to develop persons with intellectual disabilities to their full potential and to encourage the community to recognize that each such person is whole and complete created by God with a mind, a body, a spirit, a soul…
Gaahele shared the inspiration that started LITTLE EDEN society in 1967 and various types of support services provided to the residents including medical attention and support in completing everyday tasks.
Gaahele also elaborates on the challenges LITTLE EDEN faced during the COVID-19 pandemic in funding and social interaction, but emphasizes the perseverance demonstrated and smiles of the patients faces as the most rewarding part of her time at LITTLE EDEN. Residents also have the opportunity to pursue various passions, a popular one being music, as it's a universal language and mode of storytelling.
Oftentimes at hospitals and medical centers, there are limited resources to be able to support residents, like the ones at LITTLE EDEN, that have intellectual disabilities. To address this issue, LITTLE EDEN has announced the opening of their new medical center that provides specialized medical support to their residents.
Gaahele finishes by sharing future goals, events, and how the public can get involved. Any support of contribution counts! It doesn’t have to just be a monetary donation. Volunteering is an option but bear in mind that a screening will be conducted before consideration.
