Asthma is a chronic disease of the airways that makes breathing difficult. When you have it, there is an inflammation of the air passages that results in a temporary narrowing of the airways that carry oxygen to the lungs. Coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness could be the different symptoms.
According to Global Initiative for Asthma Report, 300 million of people worldwide are infected with Asthma and 346 000 deaths per year are caused by it and in South Africa only, 6 to 10% of adult have Asthma, 300 people will die from Asthma every year.
It is imperative to raise awareness around it: as a chronic disease, Asthma can not be healed but managed through proper medications.
World Asthma Day will take place on Tuesday 7 May under the theme " You Can Control Your Asthma" with the sub-theme of "It's time to Control Asthma"
This year’s theme is “You Can Control Your Asthma.” with the sub-theme of "It's Time to Control Asthma."
Through those themes, NAEP want to emphasize that effective asthma treatments exist and, with proper diagnosis, education, and treatment, the great majority of asthma patients can achieve and maintain good control of their disease. When asthma is under control, patients can live full and active lives and can prevent emergency visits to the hospital.
