The Development Action Group (DAG)

The Development Action Group (DAG) is a non-profit organisation working throughout South Africa to address the causes of poverty and inequality in urban areas. They have over 30 years of working with community based organisations to unlock opportunities and access basic services, land, tenure rights and affordable housing.

For many years, DAG has been involved in Capacity Building initiatives for grassroots organisations and leaders that were focused on increased community participation, effective urban land management and sustainable development in human settlements.

We received Akona Siswana from DAG to talk about their organisation.

 Let hear from him....

DAG was established in 1996 out of the need of developing the urban area in Cape Town regarding housing issue. On a daily basis, we strive to answer one question: "What is the change DAG wants to see?" To answer that sole question, we want vibrant neighborhood, easy access to housing, access to reliable houses and diverse housing stock and we can only accomplish that task through 3 pillars which are Demonstration, Advocacy and Capacity Building.

We have learnt a lot through doing, mistakes have been made, strategies have been changed but we strive to remain relevant. We don't see ourselves as the Messiah, we don't lead, we support the community, we co-create solutions with them.

Over the years, we built 7,323 new homes funded by the government to give to the poor community freely and we trained more than 500 civic leaders.

We are currently calling for community leaders and/or change agents who would like to improve their leadership skills to join DAG's Active Citizens Training Program that aims to strengthen the capacity of a wide range of stakeholders from across the city. The program will provide leadership training and peer to peer learning in  a formal training course.
