The State of higher Education in South Africa
We were joined on the phone by Nazeema Mohamed who is The Executive Directorate at Inyathelo to talk about how Higher Education in South Africa looks like.
Inyathelo was established as a non-profit Trust in October 2002. Their vision is a vibrant democracy in South Africa with a robust and sustainable civil society and higher education sector, supported by a strong local philanthropic movement, rooted in the African cultural heritage of sharing. Their mission is to help build a strong, stable civil society in South Africa by contributing to the development of sustainable organisations and institutions. They do this through the development of effective grant seeking and grant making practices, and through capacity development in the higher education and non-profit sectors in South Africa, and on the African continent. They also work to increase corporate and individual social giving through promoting dialogue, sharing information, and providing support services to facilitate sustainable philanthropic ventures that have lasting impact.
Nazeema said that The South African Higher Education has many challenges.
The main issue is the fact that students live in a state of poverty. The family, their parents don't have enough resources so students can't pay the fee or buy books. They can't afford to rent a place so they are forced to sleep wherever they find a place. Some of them, don't have food to eat.
Racism, xenophobia, homophobia, discrimination are the issues that our higher education-system encounter. One day, while Nazeema was teaching in a school, a gang member came to look for a pupil. It was such an unpleasant experience for her, as a teacher she should stood against that man but as a woman she couldn't. Students are exposed to gangsters even in school.
What could be the resolutions to those issues?
Equal treatment, equal distribution of resources to the all citizens, to treat people with dignity, with respect. As a country, we become violent, we don't obey to the rules, we don't embody the values that we fought during the Apartheid time said Nazeema.
