GENDER EQUALITY
We spoke to Nthabiseng Moloko from the Commission for Gender
Equality. We wanted to know the reasons why there is a pay gap between men and
women in the workplace.
The Commission for Gender Equality ( CGE ) is an entity
under the Constitution of South Africa in its chapter 2 that stipulate a free
and equal society for everyone. It has the mission of promoting respect of
gender equality. In simple words, male and female should be treated equally in
the workplace and society.
Nthabiseng said that: "it's not only a national issue,
the fact that females get paid less than males, it's a global matter. When it
comes to studies, men and the gentle sexes go through the same process but when
it comes to the labour market, women are treated differently."
In South Africa, the gap pay between men and women is 23 to
27 %. For 100 rand that a man earns, a woman gets 73 rand.
Not only is there a pay gap, but women struggle to get jobs
even when they are fully qualified. From the age of 18 to 35 years old women it
is extremely harder for women to find employment.
At the end of the day, it is only the quality of the work
that should matter, regardless of your gender. Women are standing and speaking
up, they are fighting against the status quo.
It's true that a lot have be done already but many things
need still be done in order to change gender inequality.
