MONDAY- HEALTH

Today we spoke to Tracey Malawana from HEALA about Obesity.

Heala was established in October 2016 and is an alliance of like minded organisation with the mission to improve the heart of obese South Africa. Compelled by the South Africa Constitution right that states everyone has the right to access clean water and significant food. There main focus is on prevention's and awareness around obesity in South Africa.

As South Africa has the highest overweight and obesity rate in sub-Saharan Africa, with up to 70% of women and a third of men being classified as overweight or obese. A staggering 40% of women in our country are obese, which means they have a body mass index greater than 30 kg/m2 and the rate of childhood obesity has reach an alarming level.

Obesity causes increased health care costs, lost wages due to illnesses and disability, reduces work productivity, generates earlier retirement, and adversely affects people’s general well-being.

Some of the factors that cause obesity is the based on what you eat, such as fizzy drinks that have a high sugar level.

And some of the common diseases that place a role through obesity are diabetes, heart illness, kidney failures and some causes cancer.
