Health - Schizophrenia is treatable

On the Sakhisizwe today, we spoke to Rene Minnies - Project manager at Fountain House about their Psycho-social Rehabilitation programmes and Oscar January - Service user of Cape Mental Health about his personal journey with Schizophrenia. According to experts, Schizophrenia is a serious disorder of the brain that usually appears at a young age and can cause severe disability and loss of function if not treated correctly. Oscar shared with us how life has been like for him since being diagnosed with Schizophrenia. Cape Mental Health’s Psycho-social Rehabilitation Programme aims to assist people with a mental illness to develop support structures, gain skills and work towards rebuilding their lives. Fountain House is a community based rehabilitation centre at Cape Mental Health that provides support and vocational training for adults with psychiatric disability such as Bipolar Mood Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, Schizophrenia and Depression in the Western Cape. Their individual and family counselling is aimed at improving knowledge, understanding and management of the condition.
