We closed off with an interview with Renate Jacobs - Tai Chi Chuan instructor for the International Tai Chi Society in Cape Town. She was speaking to us about the practice of Tai Chi Chuan and commemorating the Tai Chi Chuan day on the 28th of April. Tai Chi is practiced by about 20 percent of the world’s population and is fast becoming the most popular exercise in the world today whereby it’s also now practiced in businesses, hospitals, and schools everywhere. The practice is not only a valuable tool for improving health, but also a powerful business tool as companies believe Tai Chi improves productivity by helping employees to be happy, relaxed and creative. Tai Chi differs from most martial arts because people of all ages can practice it as many people with disabilities and ailments use it as therapy. It’s often called meditation in motion because of its deep, natural breathing, the twisting, spiralling, stretching, relaxing movements to help massage internal organs and balance the body’s energies. With improved circulation and a relaxed yet alert body posture and attitude, the natural healing energy of the body is enhanced. Qigong exercise combines breathing techniques, simple body movements and mental imagery to engage concentration and relaxation which forms an integral part of tai chi training.
