We also spoke to Lauren Gillis - Co - founder of Relate to tell us more about how the global United Against Malaria (UAM) initiative is intensifying its fundraising efforts in the run-up to World Malaria Day 2012. The theme for World Malaria Day 2012 - Sustain Gains, Save Lives: Invest in Malaria - marks a decisive juncture in the history of malaria control. In 2010 UAM joined forces with Relate, a South African not-for-profit social enterprise that creates and sells beaded cause bracelets to help raise awareness and curb the spread of malaria. Since then a signature UAM supporters’ bracelet was developed that has become a globally recognised symbol of winning the fight against malaria as close to 500 000 bracelets have been sold to raise funds for malaria education and prevention in sub-Saharan Africa. The bracelets are available at all Cape Union Mart and Old Khaki stores and sold for R30. The income generated from the bracelet sales is used to buy more life-saving mosquito nets and to create further opportunities for the Relate beaders. For further information you can contact Relate on (021) 422 3977 alternatively visit their website http://www.relate.org.za/ or www.UnitedAgainstMalaria.org
