25 February - Gender

On today’s show, we spoke to Lillian Artz – From the Gender Health and Research Unit. The Gender, Health and Justice Research Unit is an organisation that conducts progressive research concerning women’s rights. Due to the high levels of violence against women in South Africa, the Unit is dedicated to improving access to health and justice services for survivors of gender-based violence. The Unit uses interdisciplinary methods from various academic fields including law, the social sciences, and public health to contribute to policies and laws and to advocate for social justice. For more information visit their website on www.ghjru.uct.ac.za or call them on (021) 406 6023.

We closed of the show with an interview with Sharon Jackson –Deputy Director of Out in Africa Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (OIA) which is an organisation that celebrates the addition, in the South African Constitution, of the clause prohibiting discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation. The Festival is set out to address the lack of visibility of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex individuals in South African society and to counter negative images of this society that prevail in traditional and religious communities, and to serve as a platform for discussion and debate about the situation of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex individuals in a newly founded democracy. Sharon will be telling us more about the mini festival that was held this past weekend, its success and any festivals that will be coming up in the future. If you want more information contact their offices on (021) 461 4027 or visit www.oia.co.za
