5 October – Arts, Culture and Environment

In today’s show we kicked off with a feature interview done by Tina George, Sakhisizwe trainee producer. She spoke with Chris Leonard, a climatologist from the University of Cape Town and addressed the growing weather concerns and issues that many people have.

We also had an interview with Kat Masike –Associate producer of the Rock Challenge Show. The pressure to be cool results in many school learners making choices that affects their wellbeing negatively. Some learners find that the easiest way to gain respect from their class mates is to follow the herd. This includes decisions like taking drugs and drinking alcohol. The Rock Challenge Show addresses those issues and provides workshops for learners in a fun and creative way. The last leg of the show will take place tonight in Khayelistha at the Oliver Tambo Sport Centre at 18:00, entry is free. For more information you can contact (021) 422 5451 or visit www.globalrockchallenge.com.

We ended off the show with an interview with Jackie Manyaapelo –Trainee Artistic Director of Jazzart Dance theatre. The theatre is hosting a show called Cargo, a cutting-edge contemporary dance production directed by Mark Fleishman. It is the seventh in a series of inspired collaborations between two of South Africa’s most exciting movement theatre companies, Jazzart Dance Theatre and Magnet Theatre. Slaves were a major part of the lucrative trade that existed and forms the heart of the Cape as we know it today. Cargo is an attempt to use performance to get at what has been left out. Through voices and body movements, Cargo re enacts shattered lives, their abuse and their pain. For more information and bookings for tickets, contact Artscape Dial-a-Seat on (021) 421 7695
