26 October – Arts, Culture and Environment

Today we were joined by Warren Adler, Grant Swaby (played Ryno on Isidingo) and Qunta – cast members of StringCeasar. The film explores the life of Julius Ceasar in a visually and conceptually dynamic way. Some shots will be filmed in Pollsmoor Prison giving inmates the opportunity to work alongside well known actors. The filming in Pollsmoor will start on Monday. We also spoke to Amos Nomnabo – a Baritone from Cape Town Opera, and a cast member in Manon, a Cape Town Opera production in collaboration with the UCT college of Music. The production is about a woman who is determined to live life on her own terms but her superiors do not agree with this and makes sure that she pays a price for her progressive attitude. Directed by Michael Gieleta the opera promises to reflect the prejudices of its original 19th century audience. Manon we will be at the Artscape Opera House from the 1st -10th of November. We closed the show with interview with Rozanno Davids from the Community Video Education Trust or CVET as well Kazi from State of Cassava who spoke to us about the Youth Festival taking place at the College of Cape Town in Athlone this weekend. The Youth Festival forms part of the Trojan Horse Massacre footage which was digitized and will be screened at the Festival. The Trojan Horse Massacre occurred on the 15th of October 1985, when three young people aged 11, 15 and 21 were killed and 13 adults along with 2 children were injured when shots were fired at them by police under the Apartheid regime at the corner of St. Simons and Thornton Roads in Athlone.
