22 October – Health

Today we spoke to Dorothy Du Plooy – regional manager from Cancer Association Cape Metropole. We were talking about Lung Cancer - an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in lung tissue. It is the most lethal of all cancers worldwide, responsible for 1.2 million deaths annually. It is said that cigarette smoking causes most lung cancers. The more cigarettes you smoke per day and the earlier you started smoking, the greater your risk of lung cancer. High levels of pollution, radiation and asbestos exposure may also increase risk. Treatment also depends on the stage, or how advanced it is. Our last interview was with Tereza Hough – CEO of the National Osteoporosis Foundation. Osteoporosis is a condition in which bone tissue is reduced and the micro-architecture of bone is disrupted. This leads to an increased risk of fracture which usually involves the spine, hip or wrist. It is called the silent disease because it progresses undetected for many years. According to reports, more than one-third of women over the age of 50 and nearly half of those over age 70 are affected by this disease. Osteoporosis in men is on the increase, and one in 5 men will develop this disease.
