We had a feature by Henry Booysen on the Eradication of the bucket system. President Thabo Mbeki made an announcement during the State of the Nation Address last year that government had resolved to completely eradicate bucket toilets by 2007 and provide those households with adequate sanitation. The government further claims that there is only 45 000 bucket toilets countrywide, Henry went to investigate the truth in that statement and also the progress made since then up to now. Access to clean water and sanitation is a basic human right. The government is violating that right if there are people who are still using the bucket system in a so called democratic country.
