20 July – Arts, Culture and Environment
Today we spoke to Mandisa Zitha - Encounters Film Festival Director. This year they have a programme of 50 films – provocative, stimulating and engaging – from South Africa and the rest of world. They will also be hosting workshops that will assist 10 documentary companies’ grow capacity so that they can operate optimally. Top industry professionals, specialists in their chosen fields, will run the three-day workshops. The documentaries will be showing in Johannesburg at NU METRO HYDE PARK started from the 13 - 22 July 2007 and here in Cape Town at NU METRO at the Waterfront from the 20th of July to the 5th of August 2007. And we also had an interview with Duane Lawrence – a Break-Dancer and the host of the SA Hip Hop Cup. Duane and his crew, Ubuntu, competed in the 2006 World Cup. On their road to the Finals, Ubuntu, had to challenge every team in the competition, including the defending World Cup champions – Korea. Ubuntu now holds the title of World Cup Champions and they just returned from Paris this month where they clinched a second spot. Their story is also featured in this year’s Encounter film festival directed by Tamsin de Beer.
