18 July - Gender

In today's show we spoke to Yumna van der Schyff – a Social worker from Ons Plek. The only intake shelter for girls in Cape Town. They provide for the girls’ basic needs like food, clothing, shelter, education and love. Once the children have crossed the threshold into Ons Plek they are not seen as street children, but as children who are looking for a new place in society. They are not looking for an identity as former street children either, but want to be seen as ordinary children. For more information about Ons Plek you can contact their offices at (021) 448 6529 or visit www.onsplek.org.za

And we also spoke to Nazma Hendricks – Counselling coordinator at Rape Crisis. An NGO that believes in challenging power imbalances in society on which sexual violence is based. They seek to confront and prevent sexual violence and empower survivors through working with individuals, communities and other social structures in order to provide accessible services. Their approach is integrated, holistic, feminist, developmental and empowering. For more information about Rape Crisis you can contact their offices at (021) 633 5287 or visit www.rapecrisis.org.za

Our last interview was with Wiebke Ortman from UCT's Graduate School of Business. They will be hosting a “Women in Business” Conference in August to encourage women to study business and to provide opportunities for networking. This year’s theme is the “Diary of a Woman Entrepreneur”. Tickets cost R175 and R120 for students. If you want more information you can contact their offices at (021) 406 1426 or visit www.gsb.uct.ac.za
