Today on the last Friday of 2007 we had an interview with Frank Paco from the ever so talented Tucan Tucan - a group of musicians with different cultures and nationalities which brings on their unique sound. Today we played highlights of previous shows. We played an interview we had with Benjamin De Klerk - Tax Payers Service Education Coordinator. We were talking about Employees Tax. What is it and to whom is it payable to. We have the Standard Income Tax on Employees and the Pay As You Earn but the question is how do they differ - Well Pay As You Earn is the employees’ tax that is deducted by the employer from the amount of full-time employment income in excess of the SITE threshold for a year of assessment while the main objective of Standard Income Tax on Employees or SITE is to ensure that the sum of the tax deductions made by the employer is equal to the final income tax (normal tax) liability of the individual for the year of assessment. In today’s show, we spoke to Advocate Lynette Myburgh – from Work-in-Solutions and Equity. She specializes on litigation, mediation and labour related matters. We were talking about Salary and Bonus disputes. This time of the year there seems to be an up rise of workers who engage in salary and bonus disputes with their employers. Bonus pay means money over and above the wages of the employees which is paid by the employers. The law does not say that an employers must pay a bonus to workers this is only seen as extra money. This is usually aid at the end of the year for good performance rendered during the year or for targets reached in production of goods. The commission conducts workshops and Gender Dialogues throughout the country as a means of reaching out to the community and at the same time change the mind sets of those members of the society that need education in relation to gender equality. Today on Sakhisizwe we had an interview with Alfred Lose a Senior Investigator at the Public Protector who told us what the Public Protector is about and what it has to offer to people within our communities. The Public Protector was established in order to investigate matters and also to protect the public against matters such as maladministration when it comes to the affairs of government, the improper conduct by a person performing a public function, improper act with regards to public money, unlawful enrichment of a person performing a public function. Today on Sakhisizwe we focused on Cape Town's Arts and Culture scene. We had an interview with Leanda Watkin - Project Coordinator of the Katilist Theatre and Hilton Schilder a world renowned Jazz musician who supports the Katilist by performing free every Thursday nights. Today on Sakhisizwe we spoke to Marius Roodt who is a Researcher for the South African Institute of Race Relations. The Institute says it believes that every sector in South Africa that relies on skilled labour is facing a shortage of skills. This has brought on much debate on whether or not affirmative action is adding to the issue of skills shortage in the country. On our Gender slot today we had an interview with Judith Smith – South African Media and Gender Institute Director about comments made by Cosatu Secretary General Zwelinzima Vavi regarding 50/50 representation. Vavi recently told a South African Communist Party gathering i n Bekkersdal that those who advocate 50/50 representation in the ANC were "womanizers who wanted more women in power for sinister reasons". His comments are said to be reckless as they imply that women are mindless beings who were easily manipulated and incapable of rising to positions of political leadership without dispensing sexual favours. The Paraffin Safety Association has recently developed a number of safety education resources directed at the primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of harmful paraffin related domestic incidents. Today we spoke to Nelmarie Du Toit – Assistant Director at the Child Accident Prevention Foundation at the Red Cross Hospital. We were talking about Poisoning. It is reported that hundreds of children are admitted to hospitals for treatment after swallowing poisonous substances. Some die as a result. Others are left with permanent damage. Nelmarie told us more about the preventative measures that one can take to avoid such incidents. Today we played a feature by Sakhisizwe Producer Rhodé Marshall about dumping in Woodstock. A vacant plot in Woodstock on the corners of Greatmore and York Street has become the concern of many residents in the area as everyday there seems to be dumping taking place. This has raised questions of the health hazard that is being caused by the dirt and rats that have made the plot their home. Rhodé went to the site to speak to residents and also to City Health. Today on Sakhisizwe’s Labour slot we spoke to Lorraine Martin – Whistleblower Advisor and Trainer from the Open Democracy Advice Centre or ODAC. The interview was about the Protected Disclosures Act or the Whistleblowers Act. This act enables employees to disclose information relating to improper conduct and corruption in the workplace without fear of victimisation from either their fellow employees or their employer. Siyabelana was founded by three women who were determined to rise above their humble beginnings and make a change to their surrounding communities. The consortium has now grown to 24 women that are active within various sectors of construction. Today on Sakhisizwe we had an interview with Sandra Ambrose - National Co-ordinator of the Disabled Children’s Action Group. She spoke to us about the rights of persons living with disabilities. The Human Rights of all is essential but we still come across people who think that because they have rights this entitles them to discriminate against those that are disabled. Yesterday was the International Day for Persons with Disabilities and the theme for this year is "Decent Work for Persons with Disabilities". Today we had an interview with Dr Shirani Naidoo who told us a bit more about Asthma. Asthma is a chronic long-term inflammation of the airways caused by an allergy.
