Mpox (Monkey pox) is a disease that is caused by infection with a virus. It is starting to spread in South Africa and people are wondering what it is defined by. This virus is part of the same family as the virus that causes smallpox. People with Mpox often get a rash, along with other symptoms. The rash will go through several stages, including scabs, before healing. So far there have been seven confirmed male cases the latest one being a 39-year old male patient admitted on 28 May 2024 in Cape Town. The Department of Health is beginning the dialouge with the public to explore this outbreak.
The Department of Health urges all people taking medication for any health condition to adhere to treatment as per guidance of the healthcare provider to minimize the risk of serious health complications in case they contract Mpox and other diseases. The Department has noted that all cases/patients are living with chronic illness such as HIV, which suggests a high probability of immunocompromised unless if adherent to prescribed treatment. They also are scheduled to receive a batch of Mpox treatment named tecovirimat to hopefully prevent morbidity and mortality associated.
We spoke to DOH Spokesperson Foster Mohale and discussed what exactly Mpox is, what symptoms to look out for, how is it diagnosed, how the patients are doing, and what the Department of Health have to say about it all. We also talked about the misconceptions that many of you may have about Mpox.
Keep up with updates through the Department of Health website.
