Advocating for Fathers to Be in the Picture with Gary Da Silva from Fathers 4 Justice

Many children grow up with one parent with courts often giving custody to their mothers. Due to factors such as whether the parents are married or more traditional beliefs. Fathers 4 Justice South Africa wishes to change this and believes that children growing up without fathers is a catastrophe.

Fathers 4 Justice South Africa campaigns for the right of the child to have equal, shared, frequent, emotional, psychological, physical care and much more with both of their parents. They are a civil rights group that is campaigning for truth and justice in Family law. They advocate a right for children to see both parents even after separation of parents.

Fathers 4 Justice works to remove prejudice against fathers within the Family Advocate Offices and Family Courts. Challenging the gender bias inherent in the family law system against fathers that results in them paying for children they are not allowed to see, homes they are not allowed to go to, and schools they are not allowed to visit, whilst resident parents (mostly mothers) widely abuse this gender bias to deny the non-resident parent (mostly fathers) access to their own children for no good reason.

We talk to Gary Da Silva, chairperson for Fathers 4 Justice, about standing for this right of a daily equal relationship, the importance of needing both parents when growing up, how having one leads to faulty raising, and how we can shift this stigma as a whole.
