In today's show, we spoke to Amanda Blankfield-Koseff - Founder and CEO of Youth Citizens Action
Programme about their annual challenge for Grade 10 learners
about what it means to be an empowered citizen. Developed by Afrika Tikkun in
2010 the Youth Citizens Action Programme is a successful initiative that aims
to empowering a new generation of forward thinkers. Since its pilot the
programme has been rolled out to schools in all nine provinces across South Africa , targeting under-performing
high schools in particular in order to uplift them. Now powered by Empowervate
in partnership with Deutsche Bank Africa Foundation, The Department of Basic
Education and Heartlines, the annual YCAP initiative has developed into an
exciting and interactive competition that encourages youth to be proactive and
forward-thinking. Participating schools are requested to identify a social
challenge that adversely affects their school or community, and develop and
implement a strategy to overcome it. The first placed school from the
provincial competition receives R5, 000, with the two runners up receiving
consolation prizes as the prize money is expected to be used for the expansion
of their projects or improvement of school conditions. For further information you can visit www.heartlines.org.za or the Facebook page alternatively
