Western Cape Community Health Centres promote Medical Male Circumcision

We also heard from James Kruger - Manager of HIV/AIDS, STI and TB (HAST) for the Western Cape Department of Health’s Cape Winelands District. He spoke to us about the
Community Health Centres in the province such as Michael Mapongwana, Kraaifontein, Eerste River and Kleinvlei who are actively promoting the medical male circumcision (MMC) programme. They calling on males from the age of 15 and above to make an appointment at any CHC to have the 30 minute procedure done which is performed by trained health care workers. Its health advantages includes reducing the risk of HIV infection and other sexually transmitted illnesses, eliminating tearing and bruising during sex which reduces the opportunity of infection, improved hygiene, reducing the risk of developing penile cancer and reducing the risk of passing the virus that causes cervical cancer to their female partners.
