Make and Bake upskills Athlone girls

Deon & Iona Malan
Iona Malan - Co-ordinator of Make and Bake joined us Instudio to tell us more about her initiative to upskill Athlone girls. Make and Bake is an initiative of the Gleemoor Baptist Church that was born out of the need to protect girls in the Athlone area from human trafficking during the 2010 soccer World Cup and is still going strong. This year about 30 girls from the area attended a week long programme in June which included baking and sewing as parents often don’t have the time to teach their daughters these skills and since needlework is no longer really part of the curriculum. The project is funded through donations and run by volunteers. For further information you can contact Iona on (021) 696 9123 or send an email to gleemoorbaptist@gmail.com
