Tandeka Gqada - Mayoral committee member for Human Settlements joined us on the line to tell us more about the City’s owned houses that are up for sale. It is reported that close to 3 000 City-owned houses part of the 14 688 saleable rental units such as maisonettes, cottages and row type houses are up for sale across the Cape Metro. This gives people the opportunity to own their saleable City-owned houses as approximately 50 550 has already been sold to date. Eligible City tenants may also qualify for a discount on the price of the property, a write off of rent, service arrears and a maximum of a R500 contribution towards transfer fees. Although not all tenants may qualify for a government subsidy (Enhanced Extended Discount Benefit Subsidy) as only first time buyers who have not previously benefited from a state subsidy are eligible.
