03 December 2007 – Health

Today we had an interview with Dr Shirani Naidoo who told us a bit more about Asthma. Asthma is a chronic long-term inflammation of the airways caused by an allergy. Asthma cannot be cured, but it can be controlled and treated. Dr Naidoo told us more on how it is treated and controlled. Anthea Emmanuel the Social Development Manager of Epilepsy Western Cape joined us on Sakhiziswe to explain more about Epilepsy and seizures. Epilepsy is a brain disorder that involves the frequent action of seizures; it can also be seen as a disorder of the nervous system. The seizures occur sudden often like a dramatic “electrical storms” in the brain that affects 1 in every 100 persons in South Africa. Lastly we had an interview with Dr Karin Baatjies. She spoke to us about Breast Cancer. It is said that Breast cancer is a collection of diseases. Some cases are more aggressive than others. The type and course that the disease takes varies from patient to patient comparable to the variation that exists in fingerprints. A woman can develop breast cancer any time during her adult life - even as early as in her late twenties. One out of fifteen women will develop the disease at some stage during her lifetime.
