Staying aware of your salt intake could change your life

In the wake of Salt Awareness Week and World Hypertension day, Sakhisizwe is addressing the topic of health as it relates to Cardiovascular Disease (CVD). According to the World Health Federation, CVD’s, commonly referred to as Heart Disease or Stroke are responsible for about 18 percent of deaths from non-communicable diseases in South Africa. Although people are at an elevated of having CVDs if their family has a history with them, this is just one component contributing to a person’s overall risk of developing them. Fortunately, there are many lifestyle choices that you can make to reduce your risk.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation, established in 1980 is a non-governmental non-profit organization that aims to reduce the prevalence of CVD's in South Africa. They specialize in three primary areas, Nutrition Science, Health Promotions, and Public Relations. Working alongside communities, and in professional and educational spaces they provide South Africans with educational and material resources to reduce their risk of developing CVDs. Additionally they conduct research to further our understanding of CVD's.

Sakhisizwe spoke with a representative of The Heart and Stroke Foundation to get an understanding of what resources are out there for people at risk of CVD’s and what daily choices people can make to reduce their risk of getting them. In our conversation, we discussed the importance of awareness around salt consumption and Hypertension as it relates to CVDs. We delved into the daily choices people can make that affect their risk of contracting CVD's as well as the larger policy changes the government can implement to address the problem in South Africa. Finally, we looked at the contributions individuals, communities, and policy makers can all make to combat CVD's.
