We also heard from Vivien Lourens – Founder of the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Information
Centre. We were talking about Foetal Alcohol Syndrome. FAS is the most serious set of permanent
physical and mental birth defects associated with alcohol consumption during
pregnancy. Today
is the International Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Day. This day is held each year at nine minutes
past nine on the ninth day of the ninth month to draw attention to the fact
that women should not drink alcohol for nine months whilst pregnant. For more information you
can visit your nearest health care centre or contact the FAS Information Centre on (021) 531 3256
alternatively visit www.nofas.org
