We closed off with Annelizé van Wyk - Chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on
Police. She was speaking to us about the suspension of two senior police officers in Pretoria . This emerged after the
Committee’s call for the suspension of officers working at the Central Firearm
Registry last week following allegations, made by a private firearm company,
that senior officers are accepting bribes to issue firearm licenses. It was
also alleged that senior officers working for the CFR were accepting bribes to
issue gun licenses according to newspaper reports. The Committee wants
assurance from SAPS that no backlog will be experienced because of the bribery
allegations and the suspension of the officers, and that the issuing of
licences will proceed timeously. The Committee would also like to see measures put in
place to combat bribery in the issuing of licenses.
