NUM launches Youth Forum

We closed off with Lesiba Seshoka - Spokesperson for the National Union of Mineworkers or NUM to tell us more about the launch of their Youth Forum that’s currently underway in Boksburg until tomorrow. NUM believes the establishment of such a forum is an important milestone for the union and would take forward COSATU’s commitment towards the development of young workers. ‘Youth rising in defence and advancement of NUM’ with the slogan “Relax mchana, the NUM is here to stay” is the theme of the Forum meeting. Following research that showed the majority of NUM members are young people as 54% of its members are between the ages of 18 and 39 according to a study conducted by the Society for the Sociology of Work (SWOP) at WITS though the age limit for membership of the Forum would be 35. NUM hopes the forum would be a breeding ground for future leaders of the union and would champion the rights and interest of young workers whilst helping to strengthen the union. Winter having an effect on Bloodstocks

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “The winter is having a severe effect on our bloodstocks and we are amidst a severe blood stock shortage”, says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. There is a critical shortage in the O and B blood groups, with only a 2-day supply left. The A-positive blood stocks are also under severe pressure as only a 3-day supply is left. WCBS always aim to have a blood stock level of 5 days. The winter weather is not conducive to going out, and with the continuing storms in Cape Town, they are seeing the effects on their blood stocks. Blood donors suffer from colds and flu during this time and can subsequently not donate blood – up until the resolution of their symptoms .
