Today is World Cancer Day
We closed off with Adeliah Jacobs - Regional Manager for CANSA Cape
Metro Care Centre. We were talking about World Cancer Day. It is said that
Cancer is a leading cause of death around the world. The World Health
Organisation estimates that 84 million people will die of cancer between 2005
and 2015 without intervention. Each year on the 4th of February,
the World Health
Organisation supports International Union Against Cancer to promote ways to ease the
global burden of cancer. Preventing cancer and raising quality of life for
cancer patients are recurring themes. This year's theme is “Cancer - Did you know?” The
theme aims to dispel damaging myths and misconceptions about cancer. CANSA believes it’s important to make people aware
of the risk factors and ways to reduce the cancer risk since more than 30% of
cancers can be prevented. They also believe that due to fear and ignorance
cancer becomes a bigger problem than it needs to be as many South Africans have
preconceived ideas of what cancer is and whom it affects. One of the biggest
myths is that cancer is a death sentence which in actual fact is not. For
