"Ring the Bell" on violence against women

Patrick Godana – From Sonke Gender Justice Network was Instudio to talk about the global initiative "Ring the Bell" which will be launched on the International Women’s Day. On Friday March 8th to mark International Women's Day thousands of gender equality activists and supporters across the world will partake in the global initiative "Ring the Bell" that encourages individuals to stop and take concrete action on violence against women. South Africans will ring the bell to call on government to launch an emergency R1 billion fund to ensure adequate services for survivors of violence, to carry out a national violence prevention campaign, and to call for a national commission of inquiry to investigate why government policies and programmes are not being adequately implemented. They will also ring the bell to show their determination to halt the violence in their homes and communities. Public and private sector institutions, civil society organisations, faith leaders and individual men and women are encourage to ring a bell in their companies, constituencies and communities. Sonke Gender Justice, along with faith-based organisations, gender activists and other supporters will be at the Central Methodist Churh in Adderley Street at 12h00PM.
