On today's show, we spoke to Yoliswa Dwane - Chairperson of Equal Education. We were talking about their tour of South Africa conducting public hearings on draft Minimum Norms and Standards. Equal Education kicked off their nationwide tour this past Saturday in KwaZulu-Natal following the publication of draft Minimum Norms and Standards for School Infrastructure by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga. Equal Education believes the 2013 Draft is a weak document that offers vague definitions and avoids commitment or timelines as it merely directs the Minister to release guidelines which avoid any mechanism for ensuring accountability and providing proper redress for failing to meet standards. The schedule for the remaining public hearings is as follows: Polokwane, in Limpopo on Sunday the 10th of March at Nirvana Hall from 12h00PM. King Williams Town in the Eastern Cape on Sunday the 10thof March at Steve Biko Centre from 12h00PM. Johannesburg in Gauteng on Thursday the 14th of March at the Central Methodist Church from 17h00PM and in Cape Town on Wednesday the 20th of March at Good Hope Centre’s Drommedaris Hall from 15h00PM. Members of the public can make submissions on the draft until March, 31st. For further information you can send an email to tracy@equaleducation.org.za or gina@equaleducation.org.za
