In today's show, we spoke to Dr Wallace Mgoqi - Cape Town manager of the Commission for Gender Equality to tell us more about their 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign. November 25th to December 10th marks the 13th anniversary of the16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign. The international campaign was established in 1991 by the Centre for Women‘s Global Leadership (CWGL) as from Peace in the Home, to Peace in the World: ‘Let’s Challenge Militarism and End Violence Against Women’ is this year’s international theme while in SA it’s “Don’t look away Act against Abuse”. The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) will host activities during the campaign since it’s a catalyst for the attainment of Gender Equality and therefore through its programmes the CGE will not only be advocating against gender discrimination and violence but also importantly will push for policy change and cohesion. Some of the activities include the Launch of the 365 Days report, Encourage volunteerism in support of NGOs and community groups who support abused women and children, Commemorate ‘World AIDS day’ by hosting a seminar/ dialogue on the impact of gender based violence on increased incidence of HIV/AIDS in each province, Through provincial dialogues engage relevant stakeholders on the findings of the 365 days report, To engage Men’s organisations through dialogues/ seminars on strategies and mechanisms to reduce gender based violence, Through a coordinated programme with community, regional and national radio stations engage stakeholders on gender based violence and Partner with Legal Aid to do a campaign in raising awareness about gender based violence in Taxi Ranks, Bus and Train Stations, Schools etc. For further information you can contact CGE on (021) 426 4080 or visit www.cge.org.za
