19 September - Health - Wednesday is World Alzheimer's Day
In today’s show, we spoke to Karen Borochowitz – Executive Director of Dementia South Africa. We ere talking about the Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. On Wednesday is the World Alzheimer's Day. Statistics show that dementia affects one in 20 people over the age of 65 and one in 5 people over the age of 80. This means that 20% of people over the age of 80 develop dementia which by implication means that 80% do not. There are however diagnosed and documented cases of early–onset dementia before the age of 65. The theme for World Alzheimer's Day is 'Faces of dementia' as part of the continued education that is required Dementia SA will be holding a conference in October here in Cape Town. This conference will explore some of the global methods and best practices in caring for people with dementia of which Alzheimer’s disease is the most common dementia. For more information on Dementia you can contact (021) 421 0077 / 78 or email info@dementiasa.org alternatively visit www.dementiasa.org
