12 July – Labour

Today we spoke to Benjamin De Klerk - Tax Payers Service Education Coordinator from the South African Revenue Services. We were talking about Employees Tax. What is it and to whom is it payable to. He explained the Standard Income Tax on Employees (SITE) and the Pay As You Earn (PAYE). For more information you can contact (021) 417 1400 or 0860 121218 alternatively visit www.sars.gov.za

We also spoke to Sheila May - Organiser of the South African Domestic Service and Allied Workers Union. We were talking about the rights of Domestic Workers and Domestic Workers Act. Most domestic workers don't know their rights and still face exploitation when it comes to Minimum wages, working conditions and employment contracts but the new Domestic Workers Act sets out minimum wages for domestics and specifies working conditions such as hours of work, overtime pay, salary increases, etc. Sheila told us more about the act. For more information you can contact their offices at (021) 448 0045/6.

And our last interview was with Brandon Guy – Attorney from Guy and Associates. We were talking about the Strike or Industrial Action. We have seen a spate of such strikes in the country but the question is what contributes to the increase of industrial action and figures released by the South African Reserve Bank last year, show that the number of working days lost as a result of strike action increased from about 700 000 in the first half of 2005 to 1, 6 million in the first half of 2006. According to experts this was the highest figure in 10 years. Brandon shared some light about the contributing factors and whether political tensions play any role.
