20 February – Human Rights

Today we spoke to Judy Sobotker - fundraising coordinator at Bel Porto. Bel Porto is a special Needs School that caters for children with intellectual or physical disabilities. The school is struggling to survive and they need our help as community members to make donations in order to buy training equipment and also to keep certain facilities going. Remember every child has a right to quality education. They also sell calendars with beautiful paintings done by the pupils. So if you want more information about the school or want to make donations you can contact Judy at 021 697 2986 or the School Principal Mr Pieter Dorfling at 021 696 4134.

We also spoke to Anoushka Hadjidakis from the Keep the Children’s Dream. The organisation was established by five women who are passionate about caring for the less fortunate. They distribute food and clothing to the disadvantaged people in different areas ranging from Athlone, Mitchell’s Plain to Hout Bay. Winter having an effect on Bloodstocks

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “The winter is having a severe effect on our bloodstocks and we are amidst a severe blood stock shortage”, says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. There is a critical shortage in the O and B blood groups, with only a 2-day supply left. The A-positive blood stocks are also under severe pressure as only a 3-day supply is left. WCBS always aim to have a blood stock level of 5 days. The winter weather is not conducive to going out, and with the continuing storms in Cape Town, they are seeing the effects on their blood stocks. Blood donors suffer from colds and flu during this time and can subsequently not donate blood – up until the resolution of their symptoms .
