Our Youth Needs the ARTS: Langa Elihle Youth Project Interview

Arts and culture are impactful aspects of our lives that can provide purpose and interest in everyday lives. It can be difficult for young people growing up in townships like Langa to find ARTS opportunities. There are so many different art styles that the youth would benefit from being exposed to. It's important for the youth to feel attached to something that they're passionate about. Cape Town is a place filled with dance, music, art, and culture at its disposal but some have more access than others, and organizations such as Langa Elihle Youth Project are trying to bridge that gap.

Langa Elihle Youth Project is a newly founded organization dedicated to empowering young people through after-school programs focused on arts and culture. Their mission is to create a safe and welcoming space where youth can discover their talents, build confidence, and develop important life skills. They help young people express themselves. By nurturing an appreciation for the arts, this youth project aims to help youth reach their full potential and make a positive impact within their own communities. Now let’s hear from founders and creative director Mihlali, Chuma, and a student of the program to share more about this project. Mihlali, the founder and a dancer himself has started this project through his love of ARTS and culture and exposes children to programs that he was not exposed to himself.

In our interview we talked about the passion for this project, how it started, and the different programs that the project offers including dance programs (i.e. amapiano and hip hop) as well as choir programs to help young people explore their creativity. They have performed around Cape Town and they make sure that their programming doesn't get in the way of the student's school work. We spoke about how this opportunity allows youth to go and meet people, keep themselves busy and away from substance abuse happening in the neighborhood, and opens up their minds and sense of possibility.
