Hope House Counselling Centre: A Home for Accessible Care

Home - Hope House Counselling Centre

Mental health services is not always readily available for different communities within South Africa. The idea of receiving help for services is often viewed as not as important as other more physical issues, but this mindset can be changed. It is difficult without governmental support to provide financial funds. Judy Strickland, the founder of Hope House Counselling Centre advocates that if the government supports more accessible counselling services then a shift can happen.

Hope House, founded in 2004, offers care services to anyone who is hurting in the community because they want to remove the stigma around mental health help. They offer counselling, workshops and training, school programs, trauma informed training, company wellness workshops, volunteering opportunities and internships.  As a non-profit organization, Hope House relies on donations and funding to offer their services. The four counselling centres are located in Tokai, Kuils River, Table View, and Khayelitsha.

In our conversation with Judy we spoke about the growth of the organization and how proud they are to have expanded to multiple services while maintaining to be donation free. With their free services, it isn’t a surprise that all of their offices, placed in intentional locations are often full. Judy discusses the motivations behind Hope House, how they prioritized a person-focused approach, and how what they offer co-align with each other.
