Maths prodigy Ralph McDougall


We spoke to Maths prodigy Ralph McDougall from Curro Durbanville who took the third spot with an average of 91,71%. He scored 100% for his maths exams, placing him in the top 1% for Information Technology. Earlier in 2018, alongside other fellow Curro learners, McDougall represented South Africa at both the International Mathematical Olympiad in Romania and the International Olympiad in Informatics in Japan. He is set to study Electronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University this year. 

The results indicated an increase in the number of students with university exemption, growing from 85% to 88%; the number of A candidates, improving from 9.8% to 11.5%; and candidates with an average higher than a C, rising from 70.3% to 73.2%. These are the best results yet for South Africa.

So this need to be motivation for all students whether old or young like the saying goes "can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Think again! It’s easier than ever to start studying, regardless of your age or where you are in your career. With the variety of study options available and the many benefits you gain from studying, there is no better time to start studying than then the present."

Winter having an effect on Bloodstocks

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “The winter is having a severe effect on our bloodstocks and we are amidst a severe blood stock shortage”, says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. There is a critical shortage in the O and B blood groups, with only a 2-day supply left. The A-positive blood stocks are also under severe pressure as only a 3-day supply is left. WCBS always aim to have a blood stock level of 5 days. The winter weather is not conducive to going out, and with the continuing storms in Cape Town, they are seeing the effects on their blood stocks. Blood donors suffer from colds and flu during this time and can subsequently not donate blood – up until the resolution of their symptoms .
