Health - 9th - 15th October marks National Nutrition Week

In today's show, we spoke to Brigitte Leclercq – A Registered Dietician & ADSA Member. We were talking about Nutrition. The Department of Health is hosting National Nutrition Week from the 9th to the 15th of October in an effort to communicate to everyone that it is imperative that they need to eat less, take care in choosing their types of foods and choose their portion sizes with caution. It is reported that overweight and obesity are affecting the majority of South Africans, especially adult women and preschool children. This is putting South Africans at risk for chronic diseases, such as heart disease and strokes, diabetes and some cancers. ‘Eat less – choose your portion with caution!’ will be the central message for National Nutrition Week 2013, with three important supplementary messages, namely:

·        Choose a variety of foods from different food groups and eat recommended amounts

·        Make portion control a daily way of life

·        Use salt and foods high in salt sparingly
