25 April - Arts, Culture & Environment
Today we were joined on the line by Pam Warne – Curator of Photography and New Media at Iziko National Gallery. We were talking about a photographic exhibition that runs at Iziko South African National Gallery until 25 May 2008. The exhibition demonstrates an engagement with a wide range of concerns and forms: the personal is given new weight; and issues around identity, self-representation and gender are explored alongside landscape and post-apartheid memory. The following photographers are represented in Reality Check: Bridget Baker, Lien Botha, Jean Brundrit, David Goldblatt, Pieter Hugo, Santu Mofokeng, Zanele Muholi, Jo Ratcliffe, Mikhael Subotzky, Guy Tillim, Andrew Tshabangu and Nontsikelelo ‘Lolo’ Veleko. The Gallery is open daily from 10:00-17:00 except Mondays. For more information contact Pam on (021) 467 4660 or visit www.iziko.org.za
We also spoke to Eugene Mthethwa – Chairman of the Association of Independent Record Companies. We were talking about the Take Charge Anti-Crime Campaign. The campaign is aimed at encouraging a collective responsibility in fighting against crime through a number of activities that involves different stakeholders including SAPS, Community Police Forums, Business sector, NGOs and Musicians. One of the messages carried by the “Take Charge” campaign is a message against piracy which remains a great criminal challenge to the livelihood of the music industry. We closed off the show with an interview with Keegan Williams and the band. Keegan started playing drums at the age of 9. He has played with some of the best Jazz musos like the legendary Robby Jansen, Camillo Lombard, Jimmy Dludlu, Wanda Baloyi and more. He shared with us some of the highs and lows of his music career.
