Today we spoke to Margaret Humby – a Psychologist. We were talking about Depression. Depression has many different symptoms - some are easy to recognize and then there are others that are more difficult. The first sign of depression is often a change in the person's usual behavior. We also spoke to Dr Klaus Wiswedel - Director of the Cape Fertility Clinic in Claremont. We were talking about Infertility. Infertility primarily refers to the biological inability of a man or a woman to contribute to conception. It may also refer to the state of a woman who is unable to carry a pregnancy to full term. There are many biological causes of infertility, some which may be bypassed with medical intervention and Dr Wiswedel explained more. Our last interview was with Linda Godlieb – from Nicorette. We were talking about the dangers of smoking and ways of fighting smoke addiction. By now we all know that smoking causes cancer, emphysema, and heart disease; that it can shorten your life by 14 years or more; and that the habit can cost a smoker thousands of dollars a year. Winter having an effect on Bloodstocks

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “The winter is having a severe effect on our bloodstocks and we are amidst a severe blood stock shortage”, says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. There is a critical shortage in the O and B blood groups, with only a 2-day supply left. The A-positive blood stocks are also under severe pressure as only a 3-day supply is left. WCBS always aim to have a blood stock level of 5 days. The winter weather is not conducive to going out, and with the continuing storms in Cape Town, they are seeing the effects on their blood stocks. Blood donors suffer from colds and flu during this time and can subsequently not donate blood – up until the resolution of their symptoms .
