Today we spoke to Dr Bongi Siphamla – from St Lukes Hospice. We were talking about HIV/AIDS. St Lukes Hospice provides palliative care to people who are approaching the end of their lives and 40% of their patients have AIDS. We also spoke to Michelle May - Health Programme coordinator from the Cancer Association of South Africa. We were talking about the Colorectal Cancer. Colorectal Cancer is on the rise because of unhealthy diets. It is the third most common form of cancer and the second leading cause of death among cancers in the West. Many colorectal cancers are thought to arise from a type of abnormal growth in the colon. Our last interview was with Glynnes kolzing – a nurse from Clicks Pharmacy. We were talking about Obesity in Children and how obesity can cause diabetes. South Africa's young generation are having trouble fighting obesity. By combining an increasingly sedentary lifestyle with easy access to high fat, low-fiber fast food, children are growing heavier. The poor diet of South African youth is also stunted growth in some children. For more information you can visit a dietician or your nearest hospital.

Winter having an effect on Bloodstocks

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “The winter is having a severe effect on our bloodstocks and we are amidst a severe blood stock shortage”, says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. There is a critical shortage in the O and B blood groups, with only a 2-day supply left. The A-positive blood stocks are also under severe pressure as only a 3-day supply is left. WCBS always aim to have a blood stock level of 5 days. The winter weather is not conducive to going out, and with the continuing storms in Cape Town, they are seeing the effects on their blood stocks. Blood donors suffer from colds and flu during this time and can subsequently not donate blood – up until the resolution of their symptoms .
