We also heard from Khanyisile Mbongwa - Artist. Khanyisile and Zanele Muholi put together a collaborative show around the idea of interstices, of spaces in between/in-between spaces - literal, metonymic, metaphorical called ‘Ngaphakathi esiphakathini' is directly translated as 'inside the in-between'. The artists respond to the economies of violence of the everyday, a reality of bodies marked and inscribed in particular ways. The exhibition opened yesterday and brings together photography, sculpture and video installation(s) put together by Zanele and Khanyisile, in collaboration with other artists and students. The exhibition has been put together as part of the workshop “Thinking Africa and the African Diaspora Differently: Theories, Practices, Imaginaries”, that involves the Centre for African Studies at UCT, ‘the names we give’ at Michaelis, Chimurenga, The University of the West Indies, Brown University Africana Studies and the University of Addis Ababa. In today’s show, we were joined on the line by Tina Mason - Area Director for Regus SA. According to a survey by Regus, almost half of Cape Town businesses do not have a disaster recovery plan in place for their IT and even more have no business continuity for their workplace requirements. Tina says the catastrophic spate of disasters that occurred in 2011 has driven the issue of disaster recovery to the top of boardroom agendas highlighting the huge cost to businesses that natural disasters and their aftermath can cause. One of the key findings is that globally, although larger firms are better prepared for disaster recovery than smaller companies, 26% of larger corporates still remain without a disaster recovery facility for their IT systems, and 40% have no workplace disaster recovery facility. According to Tina, as affordable products and services become available around the globe, it is likely that more businesses will finally stop hoping for the best and seriously start planning

Today Sakhisizwe, was broadcasting live at Samila Gender Counseling and Support Service, an NGO providing services and programmes to stop gender based violence in Khayelitsha. We spoke to Hilda Mtshazi - Executive Director at Samila. Samila delivers gender violence prevention services to members of the community who are affected by gender based violence, irrespective of their age or gender. Noxolo Guma - Samila’s Project Manager for the Youth Outreach Programme joined us to talk more about the programme. Sylvia Mpinana - Project Manager for the Social Support Services Programme also explained more about her programme. Sakhiwe Mbombotha - Project Manager for the Men’s Imbizo Programme says when Samila’s staff realised that there were few services available for men they created the Men’s Imbizo Programme. We closed off the show with an interview with Michelle Olson – from the Concerned Parents of Missing Children. The organisation was established by Michelle and her husband two years after their son Matthew went missing in 1997 and aims to help track down other missing children. Over the past 12 years they have reunited more than 300 children with their parents and helped more that 150 children with drug problems. In today’s show, we heard from Samantha Volschenk – Executive Director for the Organ Donor Foundation. We were talking about organ donation in line with National Transplant Day, which was on Saturday the 3rd of December. The Organ Donor Foundation is a non-profit organisation, established to address the critical shortage of organ and tissue donors in South Africa through awareness and education campaigns. According to the foundation, Organ transplantation is now a highly successful procedure and it is considered routine surgical practice for treating many chronic diseases. At least 21 different organs including hearts, livers and kidneys, and tissues including corneas and bone marrow can now be successfully transplanted into patients. Samantha explained more on how one can go about in giving the “Gift of Life”. Remember there is no cost charged to register as an organ donor. We also spoke to Claire Mathee – coordinator of the SunSmart Campaign at the Cancer Association of South Africa. We were talking about the SunSmart Campaign that aims to raise awareness about skin cancer. As part of this campaign, they will be running beach clinics in different beaches around Cape Town. A dermatologist and volunteers are going to different beaches at special dates and beach goers can have a skin screening for free. CANSA urges all South Africans to act responsibly, while enjoying a holiday in the sun and Clicks is partnering with the organisation to raise awareness regarding the SunSmart Campaign. As we spend more time outdoors this summer, remember to check your skin regularly for changes, unusual marks or moles. In today's show we heard from Malusi Rayi - Communications Manager at the Department of Water Affairs. The Department was in Lucas Mbembe Educare in Gugulethu today to donate toys. During the International Mandela Day on Monday, 18 July 2011, the Department of Water Affairs together with community volunteers cleaned Little Lotus River in Gugulethu Township. On this day the Department also created a relationship with Lucas Mbebe Educare as a base to deliberate water issues and solutions.
