Sikhula Sonke talks about Farm workers minimum wage

We also heard from Afrieda Boesak - Deputy General Secretary at Sikhula Sonke - women led farm workers trade union. Last year the Department of Labour announced the annual minimum wage increase for all farm workers as defined in Sectoral Determination 13. The minimum wage increase was effective from the 1st of March 2011 till the 29th of February 2012 and all employers were obligated to increase their workers' wage. Afrieda explained more about the current minimum wage and what happens to the employers who do not comply. Remember the increase is not negotiable it is in acted by law. If an employer does not comply the employer is acting unlawfully. And our last interview was with Dimitri Jegels. Mr Jegels is one of the first black voices to grace radio airwaves in South Africa. Yesterday we were celebrating World Radio Day. The Day seeks to raise awareness about the importance of radio, facilitate access to information through radio and enhance networking among broadcasters. Radio is recognized as a low cost medium, specifically suited to reach remote communities and vulnerable people: the illiterate, the disabled, women, youth and the poor, while offering a platform to intervene in the public debate, irrespective of people’s educational level. Virtual Jazz Reality to feature at Helderberg Nature Reserve’s Summer Sunset Concerts

Today at the Cape Town Premier Yearling Sale cooperatives that have been funded by the dti will be selling their horses. The cooperatives, which are from KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and Western Cape received grants ranging from about R150 000 to R300 000 from the Cooperatives Incentive Scheme of the dti in an effort to increase the participation and competitiveness of small enterprises in a high value niche sector such as the horse breading industry. In today’s show, we were joined on the line by Tarien Roux – Creator and Organiser of Eco Kids Film Initiative Film Festival. EKFI’s goal is to inspire real change through the children of today and generations to come by promoting a proactive strategy to environmental awareness through film as medium. The second annual EKFI film festival is calling for entries. This year they are asking for films with the following themes or topics: • Earth, air and water
• Conservation/wildlife
• Sustainability.
The guiding philosophy for the selection process is ‘earth action’ and ‘earth inspiration’. The films should be between 2 minutes to 15 minutes in length. They accept documentaries and narratives that are either live-action or animated. Entries should be for children, not necessarily be about children. The target age group is 4-15 years in age. Entries should reach them no later than the 30th of April, 2012. The filmmakers will be notified no later than the 30th of June, 2012. The festival will take place here in Cape Town later this year. We were talking about the Science and Mathematics Bridging Programme at Stellenbosch University or SciMathUS Programme. The SciMathUS programme offers talented and motivated students, who are educationally disadvantaged and who did not qualify to be admitted to university programmes, a second chance to do so. Students may apply for SciMathUS if they have passed Grade 12 with a minimum of 50% in Afrikaans or English, a minimum of 30% in Mathematics and Physical Sciences, or 80% in Mathematical Literacy and also 50% in any four of the subjects designated for university admission. The Commercial, Stevedoring, Agricultural and Allied Workers Union (CSAAWU), the Mawubuye Land Rights Forum, the Trust for Community Outreach and Education, and the Democratic Left Front (DLF) launched the Speak-Out Campaign on the 27th of November 2011. The Speak-Out Campaign aims to bring an end to the oppression and exploitation of farm workers and farm dwellers by coming together to build solidarity, strength and hope amongst the rural working class. On Tuesday, we spoke to Brett Herron – City of Cape Town’s Naming committee chairman. According to media reports, the NY street names which stand for “Native Yard” are the City’s next target as it plans to put 52 NY name change recommendations out for public comment. Herron says the committee intends to deal with the NY names in the next few months and the process would be taken to the public, and the city would conduct extensive public meetings. The city’s public participation unit is busy preparing a public participation programme that will roll out during February and March. Brett explained more.

Khanyisile and Zanele Muholi put together a collaborative show around the idea of interstices, of spaces in between/in-between spaces - literal, metonymic, metaphorical called ‘Ngaphakathi esiphakathini' is directly translated as 'inside the in-between'. The artists respond to the economies of violence of the everyday, a reality of bodies marked and inscribed in particular ways. The exhibition opened yesterday and brings together photography, sculpture and video installation(s) put together by Zanele and Khanyisile, in collaboration with other artists and students. The exhibition has been put together as part of the workshop “Thinking Africa and the African Diaspora Differently: Theories, Practices, Imaginaries”, that involves the Centre for African Studies at UCT, ‘the names we give’ at Michaelis, Chimurenga, The University of the West Indies, Brown University Africana Studies and the University of Addis Ababa. In today’s show, we were joined on the line by Tina Mason - Area Director for Regus SA. According to a survey by Regus, almost half of Cape Town businesses do not have a disaster recovery plan in place for their IT and even more have no business continuity for their workplace requirements. Tina says the catastrophic spate of disasters that occurred in 2011 has driven the issue of disaster recovery to the top of boardroom agendas highlighting the huge cost to businesses that natural disasters and their aftermath can cause. One of the key findings is that globally, although larger firms are better prepared for disaster recovery than smaller companies, 26% of larger corporates still remain without a disaster recovery facility for their IT systems, and 40% have no workplace disaster recovery facility. According to Tina, as affordable products and services become available around the globe, it is likely that more businesses will finally stop hoping for the best and seriously start planning for the worst. Today Sakhisizwe, was broadcasting live at Samila Gender Counseling and Support Service, an NGO providing services and programmes to stop gender based violence in Khayelitsha.
We spoke to Hilda Mtshazi - Executive Director at Samila. Samila delivers gender violence prevention services to members of the community who are affected by gender based violence, irrespective of their age or gender.

Noxolo Guma - Samila’s Project Manager for the Youth Outreach Programme joined us to talk more about the programme.

Sylvia Mpinana - Project Manager for the Social Support Services Programme also explained more about her programme.

Sakhiwe Mbombotha - Project Manager for the Men’s Imbizo Programme says when Samila’s staff realised that there were few services available for men they created the Men’s Imbizo Programme. This programme is modeled on the centuries-old Imbizos that are traditionally held by Xhosa and Zulu men when they gather to debate and solve community problems.

We were talking about organ donation in line with National Transplant Day, which was on Saturday the 3rd of December. According to the foundation, Organ transplantation is now a highly successful procedure and it is considered routine surgical practice for treating many chronic diseases. Infants are considered for KMC if they have a low birth weight but are in a stable condition. Kangaroo mother care is defined as early, prolonged and continuous skin-to-skin contact between a mother and her newborn low birth weight infant, both in hospital and after early discharge, until at least the 40th week of postnatal gestational age. Kangaroo mother care does not need sophisticated equipment, can be applied almost anywhere, could contribute to the humanisation of neonatal care, and contain costs. Study suggets Cape Town workers are overworked

According to a global survey by Regus, almost half of workers in South Africa, Cape Town work well over eight hours a day and over 45 percent regularly take work home to finish in the evening. They state that pressure on working hours has increased in recent years because of slow economic recovery in mature economies and very rapid growth in emerging ones. 15 November - Human Rights - Buckets of Hope project needs community’s help with non-perishable food items

In todays show, we heard from Fatima Martin – Social Auxillary Worker at the Cape Town Association for the Physically Disabled. The association launched the Buckets of Hope project in 2009 to address poverty and employment that many Physically Disabled people are faced with. With community support and assistance from dedicated volunteers, 120 families received buckets filled with essential food items. But the need is far greater than 120 families, their goal this year is to distribute 500 Buckets of Hope during the festive season and they require the community’s help to reach it. They require donations of 15litre buckets with lids, non-perishable food items or sponsorship of, or towards a completed bucket (1 bucket = R150.00). In today’s show, we heard from Professor Eric Bateman - Professor of Respiratory Medicine and director of the UCT Lung Institute. We were talking about Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD. On Wednesday is World COPD day and the theme of this year is “Are you short of breath? You may have COPD! Ask your doctor about a simple breathing test called spirometry.” This positive message was chosen to raise awareness of spirometry as the gold standard for diagnosis of COPD, and emphasize the actions a person can take to safeguard his or her lung health. In addition, it raises awareness that breathlessness is not just an inevitable part of getting older. For people who have not been diagnosed with COPD, breathlessness is a signal that they should see their doctor and ask about a spirometry test to check their lung function. People who have COPD have difficulty breathing because they develop smaller air passageways and have partially destroyed alveoli. Professor Bateman explained more. According to Professor Barney Jordaan - Director of the Africa Centre for Dispute Settlement at the University of Stellenbosch Business School, the wage disparity between top executives and entry level employees in South Africa is particularly high in comparison to other developing and in some cases, developed countries. Professor Jordaan says “South African companies are facing extreme pressure to address growing employee dissatisfaction due to wage disparities." The Commission has put out a call to the public to voice its opinion on regulation of print media in South Africa. Members of the public and consumers of newspapers, online publications and magazines are invited, to help shape the regulatory framework of SA’s print media by submitting their written views about media regulation in SA. The deadline for written submissions is the 30th of November 2011. The Commission will following receipt of submissions, also stage a series of public hearings around the country in January 2012. On November 12, the world will mark the 3rd World Pneumonia Day. Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs, filling them with fluid. It causes cough and fever and can make breathing difficult. It is also reported that Pneumonia is the world's leading killer of children under five, claiming one young life every 20 seconds. That's more than AIDS, Malaria and Measles combined but the good news is that we can win the fight against pneumonia. More than one million young lives can be saved annually with vaccines and antibiotics, reducing indoor air pollution and through breastfeeding for the first six months of life.
